Music Ministry

All are welcome to be a part of Grace’s Music Ministry, serving our community as a community.

ENSEMBLES:

Voices of Grace:

Voices of Grace leads and supports the People’s Song in worship on most Sundays and on other festival days of the church year. This choir of adults and high school students leads worship as cantor and provides musical offerings, serving and seeking community through God’s gift of music. Rehearsals are held September through May on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm in the sanctuary.

Bells of Grace:

Bells of Grace is an intergenerational, 5-octave handbell choir. Ringing with hymns, the liturgy, and playing for musical offering, Bells of Grace regularly contributes to the assembly’s worship. Middle school students, high school students, and adults of all experience levels are invited to be a part of this ensemble. Rehearsals are held on Sundays, September through May, at 12:00pm in the rehearsal room.

Chancel Schola:

Chancel Schola [pronounced: skoh-lah] is a chamber ensemble formed by middle school and high school youth. Chancel Schola serves as cantor in worship, provides musical offerings, and impacts our wider community through musical outreach projects. Youth explore music and liturgy while developing confidence and skills in leading the People’s Song. Rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings, September through May, at 5:30pm in the chancel.

Catecheo:

Youth, grades K-5, develop their skills as leaders, collaborators, musicians, and servants in Catecheo [pronounced: kaht-eh-kay-oh]. Catecheo is the Greek root of the word, catechumenate, the ancient process of Christian formation, and means “resounding in the ear.” Catecheo fosters an understanding of worship, liturgy, and sacred music while teaching musical foundations and healthy vocal technique. We explore our world and our gifts by sharing music together. Catecheo also provides musical offerings and regularly leads the assembly in song. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays, September through May, from 4:30 to 5:15pm in the rehearsal room.

Grace Brass:

Grace Brass includes high school and adult brass players and percussionists, adding power and brilliance to our festival worship services and the Grace Christmas Concert. Grace Brass provides fanfare and supports the assembly’s song with hymn and liturgy accompaniment. Rehearsals are scheduled as an ensemble prior to each festival service.

Compline Choir:

Compline, sometimes called Night Prayer, is the final time of prayer in the monastic pattern of daily offices. Compline Choir sings unaccompanied chant, including psalms, prayers, and brief scripture passages. This is an opportunity to invite the diversity of our valley and our community to come together in our sanctuary, simply to exist in the moment, to pause and breathe deeply. For those who may want to sing with the Compline Choir, there is an open invitation to rehearse immediately before Compline. This is to allow for flexible participation of people from our wider community. Compline Choir rehearses on the first and third Sundays of each month at 8:00pm.

Cantors:

Certain liturgies and seasons of the church year call for cantors, individuals who help lead the assembly’s song. Cantors guide the congregation and often help us to learn new music in worship. Many members of our ensembles also serve as cantors; however, you need not belong to an ensemble in order to lead as cantor. Please contact Jameson Varpness, Director of Music Ministries, if you are interested in leading as a cantor.
